Addressing Poverty, Inflation and Stunting Through Fish Cultivation in Tarpaulin Ponds in Malang City

Malang (beritajatim.com) – The City Government encourages people to cultivate freshwater fish in tarpaulin ponds. This program is claimed to be an effective solution for urban areas because it answers a number of problems, one of which is poverty.

Acting Mayor of Malang, Wahyu Hidayat considers that cultivating freshwater fish in tarpaulin ponds can contribute to controlling inflation, food security, reducing stunting rates, empowering communities and alleviating poverty in Malang City.

“So this is cultivating freshwater fish in tarpaulin ponds. That's good because we have limited land, so we use this tarpaulin pond to increase fish production in Malang City. "This is part of controlling inflation, which is also very important regarding stunting," said Wahyu at the Freshwater Fish Cultivation Training event in Tarpaulin Ponds for 99 fish farmers held by the Malang City Agriculture and Food Security Service on Monday (5/2/2024).

Wahyu said that cultivating fish in tarpaulin ponds is an effort to improve the welfare of the cultivators. There is also skills training to support farmers to be independent in managing their fish farming businesses. The goal is to boost the community's economy and reduce poverty.

"We are helping 99 fish farmers here. And this is the hope that it will also reduce poverty. Because they have assistance, where previously they did not have a livelihood. With these skills, we provide the facilities and infrastructure, we provide the skills. "Finally they can work, that will also reduce the amount of poverty," added Wahyu.

For your information, in this activity, Wahyu, accompanied by the Head of the Malang City Dispangtan, Slamet Husnan Hariyadi, had the opportunity to hand over aid to fish farmers. Assistance in the form of freshwater fish cultivation packages, including; tarpaulin ponds, aeration packages, fish seeds, feed, and various fish farming equipment.

Wahyu assesses that fish farming not only creates new economic opportunities, but also has a positive impact on food security and controlling inflation. He said, freshwater fish is an alternative when facing rising prices for protein foods such as meat.

"This morning during zoom with the Ministry of Home Affairs there were several areas whose commodities were affected by inflation, experiencing an increase in the livestock and fisheries sectors. So the hope is that through training in fish cultivation in tarpaulin ponds, existing fish production can be encouraged. "Hopefully skills related to fish cultivation can reduce the rate of inflation," said Wahyu.

Wahyu hopes that fish cultivation carried out by local farmers in Malang City can increase the number of fish stocks and the affordability of their prices. Thus, fish consumption in society can increase. Along with this, the nutritional needs of the community are increasingly being met and can reduce the stunting rate in line with the Movement to Promote Fish Eating program.

"For stunting, it is related to nutrition, because the nutrition of this fish is good. Later we will see if there is fish availability in Malang City; this means it is related to fish stocks. Moreover, if it comes from (local cultivators) Malang City, it means the price can be cheaper than from other areas. And cheap prices mean that people have the ability to buy fish and eat fish.
