Garut Residents Asked to Be Aware of Hydrometeorological Natural Disasters

JABARNEWS | GARUT – The Garut Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) asks the public to be aware of hydrometeorological natural disasters.

The Chief Executive of the Garut Regency BPBD, Aah Anwar Saefuloh, said that the public still needs to be aware of hydrometeorological disasters during the rainy season.

He said that landslides and floods often occur which hit residential areas and infrastructure.

"Almost the entire Garut Regency is prone to hydrometeorological disasters, because the rainwater discharge is so high. "The impact of this large rainwater can cause landslides and floods," Aah told reporters in Garut, Monday (4/3/2024).

He explained that the Garut BPBD had carried out mapping of sub-districts that were areas prone to or at high risk of hydrometeorological disasters, namely 27 out of 42 sub-districts covering the southern and northern regions, including urban areas, namely Tarogong Kidul District.

The threat of hydrometeorological disasters, he continued, should be of concern to all parties, not only the government, but all elements of society to have disaster mitigation preparedness in order to avoid the risk of natural disasters.

"Everyone could be affected because this is a hydrometeorological disaster that has been predicted by BMKG," he explained.

He said that so far in the 27 sub-districts, several natural disasters such as landslides and floods have been reported, including in Karangtengah, Malangbong and Tarogong Kidul sub-districts.

However, he continued, the natural disaster that struck the sub-district was small in scale or had a local impact, it did not reach the district level and had a broad or large impact on community activities, and also did not cause any casualties.

"Small landslides are not included in the category of regional disasters, there were no fatalities, only houses were affected by physical buildings, a lot of infrastructure was broken, embankments were eroded," he said.

He added that BPBD Garut's readiness to face the threat of hydrometeorological disasters is by preparing communities in all sub-districts to have the ability and knowledge about mitigating natural disasters.

One of them, he said, was the implementation of the 2024 Disaster Resilient District (Kencana) declaration to optimize the implementation of disaster management at the sub-district level, and accelerate the achievement of minimum service standards in disaster management.

"Disaster management is prioritized by sub-district heads, apart from our duties, it is a shared task, a shared responsibility, not only BPBD, but everyone, when a disaster occurs, everyone is responsible," he said. (Ed)
