batampos– The Long River Small Platform in Sebong Lagoi Village, Teluk Sebong District, Bintan Regency is starting to experience cracks and destruction.

This condition worries fishermen who usually use concrete platforms.

"The poles are starting to crumble, the iron looks like it's coming out and rusting," said a Sungai Kecil fisherman, Jefry, 54.

The father of two children said that the approximately 800 meter long platform had not been thoroughly maintained for a long time.

"There has been maintenance but only for around 200 meters, the rest is non-existent," he said.

Not only that, many of the fences on the platforms are missing. Some of them already look porous and rusty.

Then, some of the shady places on the platform were no longer roofed.

"Only the first and second ones have roofs," he said.

He is worried that the platform will collapse because the supporting pillars are starting to crack and crumble.

Because of this, cars are not allowed to pass on the platform.

He said that this platform is very important for fishermen, because even though the water is low, the tip of the platform can still be used to dock fishing boats.

"If there wasn't this platform, perhaps if it was low tide we would have had to walk a long way to land and if we wanted to go to sea we would have had to wait for high tide," he said.

He hopes that the platform, which has been around since 2001 or 2002, can be repaired again.

A similar thing was said by Adli, a resident of Sungai Kecil. He said that the damaged platform had already claimed victims.

He said, a year ago, a resident died after falling on the platform.

"When there were a lot of people, the victim parked the motorbike and leaned against the platform fence which was starting to crumble and then fell down," he said. (*)
